Vavagaa: A Trend in Feminist Discourse

Sparking conversations that challenge norms.

Vavagaa (Swahili for "trend") is Soma Book Café’s platform for feminist dialogue, bringing together women, men, and youth to reimagine a gender-just society. Through grassroots discussions, online sessions, and regional convenings, Vavagaa creates spaces where diverse voices can share, reflect, and inspire change. Join us to be part of the trend that’s transforming communities across Africa.

About Vavagaa

Launched as a core program of Soma Book Café, Vavagaa is designed to foster feminist discourse at every level—from local communities to digital spaces. Our mission is to challenge patriarchal norms, promote gender equality, and build solidarity through intergenerational and intergender dialogue. Whether in the streets of Dar es Salaam or on global audio platforms, Vavagaa amplifies marginalized voices and drives social change.

What We Do.

Vavagaa operates through multiple platforms, each tailored to engage different audiences in feminist conversations:

Mtaani: Grassroots dialogues in communities like Temeke and Majohe, where participants discuss topics like gender roles, poverty, and sexuality rights. In 2023, we engaged 291 participants in these street discussions.
Vavagaa Zoom Swahili: Weekly online sessions in Swahili, creating a safe space for feminist discourse. In 2023, we had 125 consistent participants.
Vavagaa Regional: A platform for African feminist leaders to share vulnerabilities and triumphs, fostering sisterhood across borders.

Vavagaa Clubhouse: Audio discussions on the Clubhouse app, reaching 7,040 engagements in 2023.
In 2024, we’re revitalizing Vavagaa with sharper content and broader reach to amplify its impact even further.
