The entire internet went viral days after President Magufuli took office. It was all “hashtagged” #WHATWOULDMAGUFULIDO, a rather rhetoric question that was questioned in Africa and overseas. Questions were asked on all matters regarding the prospects of Magufuli’s regime. It all ranged from investment to employment, corruption to embezzlement, health to education and so forth.
E&D Readership and Development Agency – Soma was contacted on November 30, 2015 and questioned over their views regarding the prospects of readership and the education, in general, under the Magufuli’s regime.
Being in the book industry for decades and decades; and being a readership promotion practitioner since when she could remember :-), (Mama) Demere Kitunga – the Executive Director of Soma – had alot to say regarding the book industry and readership in Tanzania.
Our major quest is promoting readership. As an agency, we hope to see a community that embraces readership and values the leisure of learning. This therefore poses two immediate questions #WhatWouldMagufuliDo to make Tanzanians read more often? #WhatWouldMagufuliDo to curb challenges facing the book industry? What will he do to promote the accessibility of books and stimulate reading among individuals in the community.
Until then, SOMA remains optimistic that Magufuli would do something. This however doesn’t entitle us, as an agency, to remain dormant without initiating readership programs in our communities. We shall continue in our journey, in our quest and until when he “DOES”, SOMA shall always be a readership promotion agency.
