Soma Book Café’s programs are designed to amplify marginalized voices, foster dialogue, and inspire action. Whether it’s through Vavagaa’s community conversations, Kestoria Kavazi’s feminist archives, or the Anthology for Young Adults and Teenagers, we’re building a movement for gender justice. In 2023 alone, our programs engaged over 7,000 people and reached 25,000 clicks at Gender Festival—proof that stories can change the world.
Vavagaa
Vavagaa (Swahili for "trend") is Soma’s platform for feminist dialogue, bringing together women, men, and youth to challenge gender norms and reimagine society. Through multiple channels, Vavagaa sparks conversations that matter:
Kestoria Kavazi is Soma’s multimedia archive, dedicated to preserving the stories and experiences of feminists across Africa. Launched in 2018, it captures herstories that inspire and inform future generations. From oral histories to digital content, Kestoria Kavazi fosters sisterhood and resilience by documenting the triumphs and challenges of feminist leaders. Our growing repository is a testament to the power of memory in movement-building.
The Anthology for Young Adults and Teenagers is Soma’s initiative to empower youth to tell their own stories. In Mapenzi Kidigitali na Hadithi Nyingine, young feminists explore themes like digital love, gender equality, and social change through creative writing. This program not only amplifies teen voices but also equips them with skills to shape a gender-just future. Published in 2023, the anthology is a powerful example of youth-led storytelling.
